Join the 2023 Photo Contest on China Landscapes

Radiocarbon dating laboratory Beta Analytic and its co-host Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology invite all China-based geologists and archaeologists to send their most interesting photos of the country’s natural landscapes and historical sites. A new category has been added this year for photos featuring Beta Analytic’s gifts and freebies throughout the years. WeChat commenters of the photos and videos will also get a chance to receive gifts.

Participants may Join One of these Categories

#1 – Planet Sketcher

Send original photos of natural landscapes (e.g. mountains, deserts, waters, rocks, woods) or cultural landscapes such as cultural relics, historical buildings, etc. 

#2 – Everyday Collector

Submit original photos of meaningful moments in geological or archaeological work such as workers in excavation operations showing teamwork

#3 – Streamer Recorder

Send videos of geological or archaeological subjects, including natural landscapes, research objects, people and things in work or study

#4 – BETA Close Partners *new category*

Through photos in any setting (office, home, fieldwork), tell us your story featuring a Beta Analytic gift you received or a freebie you collected at one of the conferences you attended.

How to Join

Email your entries to chen@betalabservices.com with subject in this format: “2023 Photography Event – Your Name – Institute/University Name – Category”

Example: 2023 Photography Event – Jane Doe – ABC University – Planet Sketcher

Deadline of submission is on September 30, 2023.

Reminders:

  • Maximum of 10 photos per entry in JPG format, 10MB for each photo (max)
  • No more than 5 video submissions per person
  • Videos should be in MP4 format, each within 1 minute in length and 500MB in file size
  • Photo and video submissions must include a description of 100 words or less
  • All participants should also send a personal introduction (~100 words) and their photo with their photo or video entries.

Selecting Winners

Winners will be selected based on the number of views and likes of the submissions as posted in Beta Analytic’s official WeChat account. 

Each category has 3 winners – Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Results will be announced on October 31, 2023.

A Fun Contest for 15 WeChat Commenters

Past Photo Contest Winners

The 2022 scenery photo contest first prize winner was Yonghong Dong (Shenzhen Foreign Languages School). Winners for the geology or archaeology-related photos were Zhenwei Qiu (National Museum of China) and Zhaofang Ming (Faculty of History and Archaeology, Anyang Normal University). Video winners were Lu Cong (University of Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Youxin Jiang (Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology).

Beta Analytic launched its first photo contest for China-based researchers in 2017.  Past winners include Dr. Shi Pilong of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) who won first place in 2017 and 2018, Mr. Menghan Qiu of Lanzhou University (2019 winner), and Cong Lu of Chinese Academy of Sciences Qinghai Institute of Salt Lakes in 2021.

Terms & Conditions of the 2023 contest:

  • Beta Analytic reserves the right to disqualify any entry that is deemed inappropriate, indecent, obscene, hateful, or does not conform to stated contest rules; 
  • We reserve the right to disqualify any entry that uses any data cheating tool; 
  • The Submission must not contain material that promotes racism, hatred, or harm against any group or individual or promotes discrimination based on race, gender, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, or age; 
  • Entrants must not submit images that include children; 
  • Beta Analytic is not responsible for the content posted. This is the responsibility of the submitter; 
  • All submissions must be original work, taken by the entrants. No third party may own or control any materials the submissions contains, and the photo must not infringe upon the trademark, copyright, moral rights, intellectual rights, or rights of privacy of any entity or person; 
  • By entering the contest, entrants agree that photos submitted can be used by the Beta Analytic for marketing and/or advertising purposes; 
  • This contest is for practitioners and students of geology and archaeology only; 
  • Submissions will not be accepted once the deadline lapses.
